D
ruid Hill Conservatory and Botanic Gardens is officially known as the Howard Peter Rawlings
Conservatory and Botanic Gardens of Baltimore in Maryland and is the only remaining conservatory in the
city. The Palm House, an arched glass structure, and the Orchid Room are part of the original
1888 construction and serve as a beautiful example of Victorian architecture that continues to
bloom in Baltimore's Druid Hill Park.
Unlike other conservatories in Baltimore City that met with disrepair the Druid Hill Conservatory,
more than a century later, continues to grow and in 2004 a multi million dollar renovation project
began. Now it provides five very different settings: the Palm House, Orchid Room, Tropical,
Mediterranean and Desert; the vast plant collection offers visitors fine examples of these five
habitats. No doubt this gracious building is one of the reasons Baltimore is known as "Charm City."
