COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Mr. Alan L. Stein, President of
Tanglewood
Conservatories, Ltd., a Denton Maryland based manufacturer of ultra-luxury
conservatories, greenhouses, botanical houses and palm garden rooms, has joined
the advisory board of University of Maryland based MTES.
MTES
(Maryland Technology Extension Service), is an affiliate of the National Institute
of Standards and Technology Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NIST MEP) network and
a program of the A. James Clark School of Engineering's Maryland Technology Enterprise
Institute. MTES has provided business and technical solutions to over 500 industrial
companies throughout Maryland.
Mr. Stein, who is a graduate of the University of Maryland's School of
Architecture, founded Tanglewood Conservatories with his wife and business partner,
Nancy Virts in 1993. Tanglewood is internationally known for its creative and innovative
renditions of nineteenth-century glass architecture.
Mr. Stein notes that Tanglewood Conservatories involvement with MTES
dates back to 2003 when the company hired MTES to assist with various production and
quality related issues. At the time, MTES guided Tanglewood through the transition
from "builder" business model to "manufacturing" business model which resulted in the
doubling of Tanglewood's production capacity.
Tanglewood Conservatories' elegant rooms can be designed as "stand-alone"
additions, added to an existing structure or incorporated into a new home. A distinctive
architectural solution is the hallmark of a Tanglewood custom conservatory, which can
range in cost from $100,000 to several millions. Tanglewood builds throughout the United
States and has completed projects as far away as Shanghai, China.
The Maryland Technology Extension Service (MTES) is charged with the
application of the resources of the Clark School of Engineering for the benefit of
Maryland manufacturers. They have a full time staff of eight experienced engineers
and draw on faculty and outside consultants when necessary. Their goal is to strengthen
the competitiveness of Maryland manufacturers by providing information, decision support
and implementation assistance.
MTES offers expertise in the fields of:
- Operations and Product Improvement
- Lean Manufacturing applications
- Process and Plant layout
- Logistics
- Environmental: Pollution prevention assessment
- Engineering and R&D: Product improvement
- Business and Management: Continuous Innovation Initiative
