Tanglewood Conservatories reduces waste by donating
leftover scrap wood to the Chesapeake Woodturning Guild (CW).
Since 1992, the mid-Atlantic based CW group has been
a certified chapter of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW).
The group brings together beginner, intermediate, and advanced turners
(some with national recognition!), all with the shared mission of
providing education, information, and organization to those interested
in turning wood. Chuck Engstrom and Tim Moore from CW visited Tanglewood
Conservatories recently to pick up some Sapele scrap that otherwise would
have been destined for the dumpster. In return, they presented Tanglewood
president Alan Stein with a handsome set of salt and pepper mills 'turned'
from leftover Sapele wood.
Woodturning is a form of woodworking which uses a lathe.
It differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood is actually
moving, while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Various tools
and techniques are used to coax a shape out of the wood. In some cases, wood
that is still 'green' is initially shaped, then set aside to dry (or 'season')
for a period of time, and eventually the shaping is resumed to create the final
product. Extraordinary wooden bowls, ornaments, vases, pepper mills, platters,
and even magic wands can be created. Nearly all types of wood are used, and
sometimes multiple types are married in a single project (called 'segmented
turning') to create a beautiful pattern from the color and grain variations in
the different wood species. Woodturning projects can take months to complete,
and works from master woodturners can cost several thousand dollars.

Tanglewood Conservatories has been selected among
competing manufacturers worldwide to design and build a one-of-a-kind
conservatory for an estate in Africa. The company was selected after
an 18-month search effort, during which the client and their architect
visited various manufacturer's facilities around the globe. At each
location, they met with design and construction team members to
determine the company best-suited to handle the intricacies of this
unique project.
Tanglewood was ultimately chosen because of its
craftsmanship and because of its ability to bring the existing development
plans to a higher level of architectural detail with proportion, design,
and artistic quality.
The conservatory structure will be a large, freestanding
Orangery in the 'French Country' style and will be constructed in Tanglewood's
workshop of imported African hardwood. While such a structure typically has an
all-glass roof, the client opted to forego this feature, choosing a solid roof
instead. Set into the mahogany frame will be encapsulated leaded stained glass
panels with tempered outboard and inboard lights. The client was drawn to
Tanglewood's quality of design, craftsmanship, ability to listen and collaborate,
and flexibility in meeting their needs.
The completed Orangery is planned to be installed at the home
site in Africa in Summer 2012.

A 21' x 13' handcrafted Georgian-style conservatory
created by Tanglewood Conservatories will be one of the auction items
up for bid at an October event to benefit Preservation Maryland, an
organization dedicated to preserving Maryland's historic buildings,
neighborhoods, landscapes, and archaeological sites through outreach,
funding and advocacy.
The conservatory for the auction was originally destined
for San Francisco, to provide breathtaking views of the Golden Gate
Bridge from the owners' home overlooking the Presidio. A job-related move
for the owners interrupted the project, and Tanglewood Conservatories
arranged for the unfinished conservatory to be donated.
The event will be held on October 9, from 4pm to 7pm at
the Wye House Farm, a National Historic Landmark in Talbot County, MD.
Tours of the property will be offered during the event, and a
photographic exhibit of the area's 365 National Register properties will
be on display. Traditional local fare and libations will be served. For
more information, please call 410-685-2886 or visit
Preservation Maryland.
